CASOS Assistant Professor Jrgen Pfeffer has won the 2012 Sydney D. Drell Academic Award from Intellegence and National Security Alliance (INSA). [Link]
-
PhD student Kenny Joseph and his co-authors Chun How Tan and
Kathleen M. Carley received the best paper award for their paper:
"Beyond 'Local', 'Socal' and 'Category': Clustering foursquare Users
Using Latent 'Topics' at the 4th International Workshop on
Location-Based Social Networks (LBSN 2012) at UBICOM
Sept 8, 2012 - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.
The paper uses latent dirichlet analysis to cluster foursquare users by the places they went in an attempt to better understand check-in behavior. They find indications that complex relationships between social, geospatial and medium-based (self-representation in a broadcast media) exist in why users check in to different places.

Casos research professor, Jrgen Pfeffer, was mentioned by Vienna newspaper Der Standard as one of Austria's "rising stars" for the week of September 18, 2012. The newspaper applauds him for his work in dynamic network analysis in organizations and society. You can read this article on the German language Der Standard website:[Link]
CASOS Director and Professor Kathleen M. Carley was interviewed and quoted in NPR's piece, Software, Not Just Bullets, Puts Military at Odds, on September 12. The article explores the necessity of new technology in the battlefield, the increasing diversity of software and products, and the question of how to responsibly provide funding for these tools. June
From June 22-24, 2012, Professor Kathleen Carley attended the Networks in the Global World conference in St. Petersburg, Russia. Dr. Carley co-chaired a panel on knowledge networks and gave a keynote speech titled "Political Evolution and Revolution: A Network Assessment of Sudan and Arab Spring Power Transformations." The speech has been posted to the conference website and to YouTube. [Link]
- The Center for Computational Analysis of Social and Organizational Systems (CASOS) is holding its annual Summer Institute from June 11-June 17. The purpose of the CASOS Summer Institute is to provide an intense and hands-on introduction to dynamic network analysis and computational modeling of complex socio-technical systems. Both network analysis and multi-agent modeling will be covered. Participants will be able to complete the institute without programming skills or in-depth understanding of particular social theories. Computer programming and basic social or organizational theory are not included under the topics covered. Participants learn about current trends, practices, and tools available for social networks analysis, link analysis, simulation, and multi-agent modeling. Basic social network and dynamic network representations, statistics, analysis and visualization techniques are covered. Techniques for designing, analyzing, and validating computational models with and without network components are presented. There is also an emphasis on appropriate and inappropriate ways to critique computational models and network analyses. The strengths and weaknesses of computational and network approaches to examining complex socio-technical issues are discussed. Multiple computational platforms are explored and hands-on experience are provided. An examination of social network methods, complexity theory and procedures for integrating network-based metrics and statistics into computational models completes the program. The software tools students will learn and work with include: ORA, AutoMap, and Construct, which are network analysis, information extraction, and simulations tools, respectively, that are developed at CASOS and widely used globally in business, government, and education.
